I have an 18 Outback 3.6R with 4500 miles just wondering what route others have gone, regular oil or synthetic???????????

I chose synthetic because I consider my driving conditions, while not meeting the exact definition, to be more on the severe side. So, I use syn and keep with the normal OCI. It's also better for cold starts in the winter since I live in the northeast.

The nice thing is this engine will be happy with either, so it's entirely up to you.

My first oil change is coming up after a Thanksgiving road trip. I'm doing it myself, installing the Fumoto valve and going with full synthetic Motul 5W-30.

i have been using synthetic in all my cars for over 40 years. My H6 is getting Royal Purple 5W-30 High Performance Synthetic. 30k+ miles and does not use any oil. I change at 6k but will eventually push it further.

Subaru recommends synthetic but does not require it. Only spec they require is API SN.

So, get 5W30 with that spec in your favorite color bottle.

Or shop sales. Over the past 100,000 miles I don't think Kaylee has run the same oil for more than 2 or 3 changes in a row. Conventional, blend, synthetic, high mileage...whatever. She's seen it all and still runs same at 165K as she did at 64K.

Mal has seen a different oil every change I've owned him for the past 20,000 miles.

I’ve always used synthetic for the past several years. I drove a 2003 VW Jetta, (Gretchen) I bought new to 215K miles and a 2007 VW (Elsa) to 165K. My 2016 OB (Fiona) from new has had only synthetic and she’s up to 37K so far. I change the oil and filter and rotate the tires every 4K to 5K miles.

Fieldhammer - are you still using the Motul 5w30 and how well do you like it? I am considerind using the same oil.

If you are buying, use Synthetic.
If you are leasing, use a Blend.

Here are my top 3..

1. Mobil1
2. Castrol Syntec
3. Pennzoil Platinum

If you have the extra $ to blow and only want the best for your child:

4. Royal Purple

Motul seems overkill to me (I've heard it's a popular choice for turbos) and I'd sooner use conventional than a blend. That said, I've always used a sensibly-priced synthetic with a good reputation.

Here's what I've discerned across a couple hundred Subaru's and picking some brains of well versed Subaru builders.

Conventional and change it a lot
or
Synthetic is better

On a new car the differences and pragmatic considerations are small so it doesn't much matter. Age and use changes the equation.

If you get hard core synthetic shop owners into an intelligent discourse, past the opinionated elevator speech, they either don't know (no real data/experience/just opinion/business/supply decisions) or they'll tell you conventional is fine but less forgiving, needs to be changed often, and doesn't handle stress as well (towing, overheating, low oil levels). Those are end user realities that a shop can't predict or manage so a a shop wanting to curate a certain image or liability or protection or whatever is better off leaning heavily towards synthetic and that comes out in their business model. Others don't care and just change it often so conventional is fine.

There's one clear, quantifiable, high percentage oil choice related issue:

By far the most common long term issue with Subaru's is oil usage past the control rings, it's been very, very common on 150k+ (making up a number) Subaru's for many decades. well versed, highly experienced subaru specialists inform us it's the oil control rings that cause this and it's oil related. Maybe attention to detail meticulous oil changing online subaru forum members never have it happen but if you're around 100's of Subaru's it's nearly normal to be coaching others about topping off oil. Caked up oil control rings are the main contributing factor. When considering oil - there's a direct, quantifiable, physical failure mode we can consider that impacts a significant number of Subaru's.

Synthetic oil is a fantastic mitigating factor for that. It's far more forgiving of temporary lapses and localized internal stresses. If you use conventional oil, that works fine with very regular changes, never letting it get low, never running hot or low on coolant, hard driving, things more common with older vehicles.

New/Used/Length of ownership considerations:
New cars - it hardly matters. Oil changes, history, usage, care, maintenance, chance of overheating are all highly in favor of not stressing oil.

Once you get into used cars or or high mileage Subaru's...things may change or be unknown.

Synthetic is so cheap, has extended change intervals for less cost that there's hardly a reason to not use it any more with a lot of upside.

How I approach this with my vehicles/others:
With H6's timing chains sitting in oil, 2 more sets of oil control rings, and the small orifices feeding the chain tensioners I just lump H6's in with turbo's and figure they should all get synthetic.

But - if I'm helping someone (I've helped hundreds over the years with Subaru's) - there's no need to convert them to synthetic - I just tell them to check the level and change it often and never run it hot.

For 2019 3.6R, is it OK to use 0W20 synthetic in place of 5W30 synthetic. The manual says 5W30 synthetic, if using a synthetic oil.

Shell Rotella T6 5w40 full synthetic (diesel truck) oil...have used it for 10+ years in everything from my Porsche flat 6, Subaru flat 4s and 6s to my Honda V4 motorcycle.

I used to have Blackstone labs do the Porsche's oil analysis at every oil change, and never had any issues or serious degrading - T6 is designed for high loads (diesel crank bearings, etc), and can be had for +/-$20/gallon on sale at TSC.

I've used many brands of oil in my 3.6L. All with great success!

Pennzoil conventional 5W-30, 10W-30, 20W-50.
Valvoline conventional and Maxlife blend 5W-30, 10W-30
Quaker State conventional 5W-30.
Rotella T6 5W-40
Mobil 1 TDT 5W-40
Idemistu 5W-30
German Castrol 0W-30
