I'm shopping around for 90K mile service and looking at my dealers pricing and what they do, it's seems absurdly priced.

Aren't these mostly things that get inspected during normal service anyway?

in the US, you are allowed to do car maintenance yourself or at a shop other than the dealer without jeopardizing your warranty.

perhaps find a subaru-friendly independent mechanic near your city and price that service there.

400 bucks doesn't seem out of line to me.

You can change the air filter and cabin filter yourself in a matter of minutes.

Instead of asking for the 90k service ask for specifiics, oil change, tire rotation and brake fluid flush.

As noted, both air filters are easy to DIY. You can get it done without any tools, but a screwdriver helps for the engine filter (to pop the intake tube off the throttle body for extra play).

Ask for A-La-Carte pricing on the other services. From that list my 90K service will probably just be changing out the diff fluids, if I don't have them done before. Add that to the regular oil change and tire rotation and I'm right around $200 plus the cost of the filters I replace myself.

I perform these services myself. A basic array of tools and a willingness to get dirty is all you need.
