Looking to replace the current engine as has bent valves & the mechanic doesn't want to tear it
down & replace them. Any help, hints in finding one w/ low mileage (100,000 range) would be great.

If Soltice has a rusting 96, how in the world do i find the link?

i clicked the link in your title & scanned through
& read the posts at the thread.

It's fine for swapping out engines (which is something quite beyond me)

Says ? about finding another 96 2.5L w/ low mileage (100,000) engine
to replace the one i currently have w/ bent valves.
If said information is indeed in that thread, i must have missed
it.

Does it makes any sense to tear down the engine
& replace the valves ?

EJ25D are the worst engine the company ever made, and a 96 is even worse then the 97-99. and finding a EJ25D that runs and is not a turd is a real chore,...as they all have the potential for sucking. ...or running for 35 days and then melting down.

So finding a correct EJ22 is the replacment. therefore going from the worst to the best engine the company ever made.

trick is finding a EJ221 that will drop right in, as it needs EGR. and should not be a later EJ222. hence why you should look at the above thread.

your car is not the only one with a problem EJ25D. hence why the thread about putting a EJ22 in such a car was made and linked many times here. (and has become a typical mod).

does the body have any rust? if yes toss it. and move on to something better.

if your goal is a great highway car,...this is not it. fine going around town slow or on 2 lanes less then 65mph. but regardless of what engine you put in it. these are old heavy and slow from behind the wheel.

and the suspension they put in it lacks the fancier stuff that the added to the 2000-2004 legacy /outback series. such keeps the rear end planted and not leaning.

the body was pristine until i drove it off the road
& into a fence tearing off the driver's side mirror
& deeply gouging the paint from the front to the door.
Also, unhinged the front plastic bummper on the left side.

It also is developing transmisson issues - slips, etc.

Made a 3000 m roundtrip on interstates so am aware
of the sluggishness, & the gas mileage was unimpressive.

Is there a decent Outback Legacy AWD of a little newer
issue you would recommend &, that doesn't have the engine
problems ?

It almost sounds as if the current probs both w/
the engine & the transmisson are not worth the time
or $ to pursue.

plenty threads, on what to buy.

2001-2009 6 cylinder cars. if they need head gaskets you drop in a JDM japanese domestic market used engine. these need high octane gas like a turbo. but don't explode on the side of the road for no reason like a turbo car.

and it is cheaper to put the JDM engine in one, then do head gaskets on a EJ251/EJ252/EJ253 engine.

and FYI, your 1996 EJ25D needed high octane gas.
that one initial year of that engine had some odd parts in it, if you put lower stuff in it, = pinging and sluggishness.

problem with trying to do the EJ22 swap.
its like you need old subarus in quantity in your location to inspect them and make sure they have EGR before you pick them.

and some places just have few good old subaru to pick from. ...or just plain junk beaters with similarly bad engines in them also. (so you go from bad to bad).

I live where there are lots of subarus, but for me to do such a swap could take months of hunting for a worthy EJ221. (good or bad, whole things just get crushed after all these years)

to have an abundance of old suburus to go physically
inspect is little more than a pipedream

my mechanic is looking online

i'm trying to get some idea of the scope
of the problem - the more i hear & read (here)
the more it seems like
this may be a long term project assuming it even
continues

as for the EJ22 engine - a question i added in the edit -
if it's such a good engine what's excessive mileage ?
Is 200 thou way too much ?

problem is: its not yours,
so 200,000 in a car that was yours may make you think it could go 350,000 miles.
but its someone's thing that they are getting rid of. (might be a basket case).

easier to buy a whole running 1995 subaru with a automatic trans in it.
(all those had EGR in them). if its a rust bucket you can get it for a song.

but if you can't get one. ....just move on.
"onward and upward",...and anything that reliability starts and runs, is upward from where you are.

front wheel driver are great with 4 snow tires on them,...so they don't fish tail. sadly I see lots of things in my neighborhood running around with 2 snows.

ok - what is EGR ?

...
EGR is "exhaust gas recirculation valve" it runs from the cat converter back to the engine to reburn some of the soot.

cars without it either dump more out the tail pipe or have cat converters that do more to burn up the bad stuff.

all EJ25D cars have them. but not all EJ22. and there the problem lies trying to find a EJ22 with one, so that the EJ25D car and its computer will like the new engine.

I have a friend with a 96 legacy 100 yards behind his house on blocks. I can look down into the engine bay and see no piping going into the heads from the exhaust. = no EGR on this particular one. (got 180,000 miles, landed there from being too rusty, and having a mushed grill / rad from a deer hit).

what I think should happen to your car. just get rid of it as a parts car or scrap. ...I see where you are at in the world, and you are just too far away from other antique subaru people to fix this..

...unless there is some local antique subaru junk yard right there behind a garage. (such a person may buy your car,...or guarantee he can put another engine in it for cheap and get it to be nice again....but such ideas are a real gamble.)

but easier to find people there that love old 7.3 ford diesels in such parts. (vs. the only subaru lover)

Hey, Now ... they usually blow up for a very good reason.

and such the case of your poor abused overbuilt Francine:

hooning = testing for drag racing, behind the home depot out of sight of the cops. (and possibly not legally a public road).

and then limp home at idle speed all the while the owner wondering if they are doing more damage and how much wallet it will take to fix.
