Hi,
I am new to this forum. Along time ago I owned a ew Subarus. A 1980 Subaru wagon and a 1982 hatchback. I have not owned one in a while. About a year ago I purchased a 1997 Subaru Legacy wagon from a friend that his son got t-boned in and totaled it. :surprise: It only has 124k miles on it so I am looking for a good body with a blown engine or transmission to put it in. Does anyone know what year body the 1997 2.5 dohc engine will fit in?
Thanks,
Larry

Is that a legacy outback? or a legacy gt?

_______

this is what had a EJ25D:

Legacy GT wagon / sedan 1996-1999

Legacy outback 1996-99 (1996 manuals had the good old eJ22)

and 1998 foresters.

each of the above have different gear ratios .

plain legacy,...and impreza had the EJ22 size.

_____

the good news: as the EJ25D was such a turd on headgaskets and main bearings, ...some with rust free bodies can be had for a song.

I think I would preemptively do head gaskets and or a main bearing on that before dropping it into another body....

And put on a 10mm Oil Pump (if not already installed)

at a 124,000 miles I would think the plastic oil separator has already been replaced by a metal one.

the plastic one leaks like a stuck pig,...easy to change while the engine is out of the car if it is still there.

97 Legacy totalled

Hi again,
Thanks for all your input it helps me a lot. I will look into the other repairs as well when I pull the engine out. How can I tell if my engine has a 10mm oil pump in it or not?
Thanks again,
Larry

97 legacy's can have 2.5 or 2.2. are you positive which engine it is?

Although for swapping it matters not since both those engines are interchangeable into each other. The 97 2.5, or the 97 2.2 (with the exhaust manifold) will install into:

Any 1995-1998 EJ22/EJ25 vehicle
99 Outback, SUS, or GT

The 97 2.2 could also be installed into any EJ18 vehicles.

It wouldn't be impossible to install them in 1994 and earlier vehicles but unlikely you'll do that so we'll ignore that option.

lower trims - base, L's, etc have 2.2's.
others can have 2.5's.

hopefully it's a 2.2 (best engine Subaru's ever built) and not the 2.5 (worst engine Subaru has ever built).

97's have 10mm oil pump already, no need to replace. reseal it.

both are interference engines - install a timing belt kit, new pulleys and tensioner.

i'd do cam seals, cam orings, crank seal, VCG's, and rear separator while it's out.
