99 Subaru Outback thats been overheating...

I have 1999 Subaru Outback. About 3 weeks ago it started overheating quite badly. A mobile mechanic came to my aide on the side of the road. He told me my thermo fan wasnt kicking in and it was most likely my thermostat needed to be replaced. Well, to get me home, he somehow piggybacked the thermo fan off the AC fan (hope that makes sense) So basically I cant drive my car UNLESS the AC is on.
Well now I have replaced the radiator and the thermostat but I don't know how to change back the fan set up...
Can anyone help ?????

eek.

Replace the cap also. Lets hope that does it. It is hard to tell what he did without seeing the car. There is an engine temp sensor on the bottom of the engine. I hope he did not tap into that. He may have jumped the fans from the AC compressor which should be easy to see. Pop the hood and first look to see what wires look new and dont look like the belong.
