I have a 2000 subaru outback with a automatic transmission. This happens once or twice a day. When I come to a stop the transmission does not disengage from the gear its in (mostly happens in 4th, but not always). The car stalls from not disengaging out of gear.

Sounds like torque converter.

When was the last time the fluid was changed?

Did you replace the torque converter because of this problem? If so, I'm wondering if it's an electrical connection (wire(s) or PCM/ECM).

If the torque converter clutch solenoid is sticking, it will keep fluid pressure on the torque converter clutch causing this issue. Its like stopping without disengaging the clutch on a standard.

Does it start right back up after it stalls? If so, it a good bet the TCC solenoid is bad and releases when fluid pressure lowers.

When the car stall, I start it back up and its good again. Thanks for the advice.

Shift into neutral when coming to a stop until you get it fixed. Had to do that with an old FWD Pontiac until the TCC solenoid finally showed up.

I have a 2005 outback and the only problem I have since I have this car is, when it's cold for the first 15 min of Driving, even after a couple of minutes of warming up, the 4th gear hits like I got hit by an other car, I've had this car for 6 years and always did that, had it check by specialized Subaru tech's and all they did was reset the computer, but after a few days started up again. Someone suggested to go with synthetic oil in the trans, because it doesn't thicken in the cold, have to get it done to find out for sure, will come back to comment about it.

Use only subaru ATF-HP. It's the right fluid for this application. Have you had the fluid flushed at a subaru dealer? I would do that first. Or do it yourself. You can use the pump in the transmission to do a full flush. Details in the DIY section.

You do need to reset the computer after the full flush. It will relearn the proper pressure settings to keep from clunking. It is normal for some harder shifts when cold, but it shouldn't feel like you got hit. You can reset it yourself using FreeSSM and a cable.

A&C Trans. Specialists just flushed my trans and recommended an additive instead of synthetic. Told me to save my money. I've had synthetic in our 2000 and it was good, this additive seems to be the cats meow also.
