I did a valve job on my '03 Outback (2.5 SOHC). I lined up all 3 timing marks but it will not start. It spits and coughs. It sounds like The timing is not right. If I remove the valve covers which valve should be acuated first? I can't find the answer and I'm worried I have the cam pullies 180°out on one or both sides.

pull timing covers first. line-up the crank mark (you used the dash/groove on the tab at the back of the sprocket right? NOT the arrow or triangle on the front?)

find the tooth count for your engine and triple check the timing. belt marks will be off, ignore them.
