without the jumpstart battery there, would the missing section create a weak spot in the floor?
I thought that as well until I tested out how the floor felt with no styrofoam tray in there at all. It's really solid even with just the edges supported (you can sit on it no problem).

I did think about reinforcing the lid with steel strapping, but it doesn't seem necessary.

I made a minor modification to my cargo tray with a hacksaw. Had to make the JNC660 Jumpstart battery fit under here. Unfortunately, I don't think the cargo area cover will fit anymore.
Good job! I did a similar alternation on my 2013 OB..... on my previous Subaru (2010 Forester XT) I chucked the foam insert, inverted spare tire just to gain additional storage space there. The rear deck/lid is sturdy enough to carry "normal" load/weight. I tested it by climbing and sitting on that lid and it did not bend at all!
