Over the weekend I picked up my second ever Subaru. This time I went with an 04 Outback 2.5 with a manual transmission. It came from Maine and the person couldn't take it back with her. I didn't show up planning to buy it, but I couldn't resist it's charms after a test drive.

Look for rust underneath - exhaust/suspension/frame rail.

Most shops don't replace the timing belt tensioner and pulleys, which are more prone to failure than the belt itself - particularly the tensioner and lower cogged idler which is the most likely part to take out the timing belt and cause bent valves in the heads which is what those motors usually do.

It only takes an hour or two if you take your time, if you have a decent mechanic or can do it yourself they're really easy. get Subaru or japanese parts if you do it.
