Cruise kicked off, Cruise light flashing because of CEL. Don't know anything about the Stability control (mine's a '99).

You will need the CEL codes read (go to most chain parts stores and they will read the codes for free). Bring the PXXXX codes back here and smarter folks can help you figure out what to do.

ditto

Is the Check Engine light still on?

The cruise control is automatically disabled whenever there is a problem that triggers the CEL. The flashing CC indicates that it is disabled. I'm not sure about the Stability Control light being on, but would think that if there was traction problem causing the Stability Control system to kick in, it would also turn off the CC -- the SC uses braking and engine throttle to stabilize the car so the CC has to be out of the loop. If you were in very heavy rain doing 80, it's very possible that there was some hydroplaning and loss of traction that you might not have noticed because the system was doing what it is supposed to do.

If the CEL is still on, I'd have the codes read to see what triggered it. Usually, if a problem is not detected again for three consecutive driving cycles, the CEL will go out (although the code is stored for a longer time and can still be read).

Our 2010 did similar on a very windy day while dodging/hitting potholes. It reset itself after a couple of days (before I could get tothe parts store to pull codes). I recommend against using cruise control during wet or snowy conditions. If you loose traction, things will get hairy in a hurry.

Read the codes yourself. 2005+ models display all the engine/transmission/abs/vdc codes on the dash.

Just perform this sequence within 10 seconds:

1. Turn key to ON position (just before START)
2. Turn headlights ON
3. Press Trip button 4 times
4. Turn headlights OFF
5. Press Trip button 4 times
6. Turn headlights ON
7. Press Trip button 4 times
8. Turn headlights OFF (optional)

Codes will display in the trip meter. You might have to press the Trip button to cycle between engine, transmission, and braking computers.

The abs/vdc codes, at least, should be saved forever unless a dealer clears them.

This is a very nice feature of the 2005+ outbacks. My 2001 has three very different and complicated procedures for reading the engine, transmission, and braking codes. But it hasn't thrown any codes yet, so eh... :)

The code is a P0011- cam timing over-advanced bank 1. We cleared the codes on Friday and it has not re-occurred. Sounds expensive if it keeps popping back up!

Found out that the ECM was in fail-safe mode.
