I get a sort-of metallic sliding noise at low temp starts. From what I've been told and have read, most likely due to the starter not disengaging quickly. There are posts about rebuilding and re-lubricating the denso starter for this problem.

I wonder, is there an easy way to refresh or place grease on the flywheel teeth? through a port somewhere? would that be advisable?

Sounds like a good way to make a mess. I'd pull the starter and lube it.

It's only happened to me once in 2 years, and never in 4 years on my previous outback.

I had in mind reaching in with an acid brush and painting 3-4 teeth with some grease in a coupla of places.

Not pouring a quart of gear lube in.
