I would have preferred he stayed.
What bothers me is that while it's sensible to honor his wishes, he could have left without being banned. Then again some people want help to curb their impulsive actions - I have a friend that wanted me to save some of his money for him because he had trouble with spending. If that was his reasoning for wanting to be banned, then it makes more sense.

If he didn't ask for the ban to be permanent you could simply unban him immediately and he can return any time he wants.
