Thought I'd ask here first before going back to the dealer.

Before purchasing my 2018 Outback Limited 2.5 I had been driving my parents 2015 OB. Theirs had a rubber insert in the center console cup holder which held smaller cups and plastic bottles in place.

Out 2018 does not have that so I was wondering if it was something that was eliminated or just not put in the car and I should go to the dealer and ask for it.

Thanks,

David

My 2017 did not come with an insert. I bought one and did not really find it useful.

...and I thought the cup holders in my 2013 sucked, but they were leaps and bounds better than my 2017.

I order the rubber cup holders, and they are rarely useful. Of course, when they are, they are really helpful...because that means there was no way you weren’t going to end up with the small coffee cup in your lap.

I believe what you are referring to is the Subaru ashtray holder sleeve. My 2016 randomly came with one as well. It definitely stops water bottles, travel mugs etc from sliding around. However being a bit too small and made of rubber the insert would get stuck to the bottom of the bottle or mug. Cant tell you how many times i ended up inadvertently bringing it into the house with me. In another thread on this site about this issue somebody had a great idea about using double sided tape to hold the insert in place. I did that and now it works perfectly as a cup holder. I picked one up at Amazon for the Wife Legacy for about $12.

My 2018 Limited has rubber inserts in the bottom of the cup holders. I'm not sure if they were an option, but I don't recall them being one. Also, I haven't tried to remove them but they felt like they may have been molded there.

Nope, and it's a terrible cup holder. The best solution I have found so far is to open up two napkins, place inside cupholder, and then put your cup in. It gives it a little tighter fit, and generally catches and absorbs the inevitable spills. Every few days I replace it. Classy and sexy.

Yeah..my 2017 did not come with one, either So I kept the insert from my 2015. The 2017 also did not come with the coin tray inside the console glove box. I kept mine from the 2015 as well. Dealer told me they were probably stolen from the cars on the lot. A wrench I talked to told me none of the new cars came with them, the salesman didn't know what he was talking about! Heh...nothing has changed. To a wrench, salesmen are so low, they have to look up to sit down! >:)

I understand the 2018 comes with LED interior lighting. If so, I won't need to pull all the aftermarket LED lighting I installed.

It doesn't unless the car is equipped with one of the popular packages from the factory. Otherwise it is a dealer accessory. Not worth it IMHO, only changes out the two front map lights and the center dome light. Trunk and puddle lights remain incandescents.

Question: how come there is a need to eat or drink something in the car? And how much time do you spend in the car daily so this is really an issue? As for myself, I don't eat or drink when driving, but then again, I drive a car for 30 minutes per day or less in average.

As i said in my earlier post on this thread it is not a cup holder. According to Subaru it is an ash tray holder that holds their accessory ashtray. Since it is not intended to be a cup holder it does not work well as a cup holder.

Nope. 92185AL00A STOPPER-BOTTLE (a.k.a. Cup Holder Stopper) $4.40 MSRP

The Ash Tray Holder a different, accessory item: F6010AG010 Ash Tray Holder $12.95 MSRP.
I'll be damned. Looks exactly like the ash tray holder to me in the picture. Must have a wider opening?

Actually just went out and checked my car. Mine looks more like that stopper bottle thing. Wow it really isn't a very well designed cup holder. I had to put double sided tape on it to keep it from sticking to all my bottles. Learn something new everyday i guess.
