First thing you need to understand about Seattle is we have more Subaru's than people. If you are at a light with 20 vehicles at least 5 will be Subaru's. So yea they get a stolen a lot but only because there is a lot of them. :p
As one of my friends says, Seattle is full of green Subaru's with left leaning political bumper stickers. Come to think of it, that seams to be true. Also living in Seattle you have to be prepared for the one or two inches of snow we can get each year.

My first subaru was a 94' loyale wagon that I sold with 247k on the odometer. I loved that car! The only problem I ever had with it was wheel bearings. Had a couple year hiatus before I picked up a 2005 OB this summer with 132k on it. I bought it knowing I was going to immediately have to put in at least a grand for timing belt and a few other things. So far I really enjoy driving it, and I can say I'm very happy to be back in a Subaru.

The pheasant metaphor disarmed me:) :
"And to everyone, a Subaru stands as a shining beacon of hope that one day, all cars will be made this way. When you slam the door, it makes exactly the same sound as a recently shot pheasant hitting the ground, and that, as everyone knows, is one of the most satisfying noises in the world.
Plainly, this attention to detail goes further than the door though, because in every survey on reliability, Subaru always comes in the top five."

On the other hand the article from the TopGear is quite old as it was written in 2007 :-( .
Let's hope that his opinion remains the same in 2013.

I would thus not recommend a Toyota either then. I can also give you pages upon pages of electrical repair bills on my 2008 Camry which I finally traded in 2010 with only 55k miles. Replaced the heater / ac blower fan twice, once under warranty and the 2nd I had to pay for it because it was over a year. I put around 30,000 miles a year on my car...and was told, buy a Toyota it will last forever....not!

And then after 36,000 miles, each of the power locks / windows started to fail - again my expense. I paid the first door / window repair for an easy $600. Then one by one each of them begin to fail. Dealer had the nerve to blame me and how I operated them!

I had a 2001 outback which I got rid of for the Toyota in 2008. I never had one problem with the 01 Outback...thus I am back to a Subaru.

As everyone else has said, every car maker has had its run of bad cars and if you want to judge an entire line of cars on one expereince....well, you won't be able to buy any car than if that is the case.

If you want I can tell you about my wife's Acura (owned by Honda). Yeah all of the recalls and repairs have been under warranty...but still a pain in the butt to drop it off all the time! I should find some Honda / Toyota forums to post on...but I am just too busy.....

I hate Subaru Outback 2011

This is a true story that happened Jan 7, 2014. I live on a a street with about a 15% incline. I pulled up into my driveway turned off my car put foot on brake, brake went all the way to the floor, I tried to brake over and over, nothing (the car was off) the electronic emergency brake never worked (I have a video of the police officer who was first into my car after it crashed and the emergency brake failed to work for him also) I have been driving stick shift since I was a teen I am 59 I know where the clutch is, I was hitting the foot brake. Anyways, my car rolled backwards gaining speed out of my control I had to wait til it hit something to make it stop. Thank God no one was hurt!!! It hit the power box which stopped my car!
The Subaru dealer said I should have turned my car on and used the brake, you don't think of that when you only have seconds. They also said I should have known that when there is no power on the car the emergency brake is not supposed to work? Did you all know that? I never got in the car again. I traded it in for a car with a manual emergency brake!

PS we found many others on the internet that this has happened to!!!
Also, the Subaru dealer said they did not want to watch the video of the police trying the emergency brake.

I have a 2004 STi and I love it to death. I also have an '01 Outback and I wish it would die.

I won't be buying another subaru, I'm not happy with then lack of performance increases over the years, and the styling is horrible.

If you are so experienced with manual transmissions, why do you park in neutral?

By the way......My emergency brake in my '12 Outback works with the key off.

You live on a 15% incline with a manual transmission and didn't think it was important to get the parking brake fixed ASAP? You were begging for trouble. My driveway is 15% incline and I set the parking break religiously.

You didn't mention what model year OB you had, but it may have been under warranty.

My '13 has the electric brake that works with the engine off, I use it that way all the time. If something fails with it, you are supposed to get a brake light error on the instrument panel.

You said the "emergency brake never worked" - why didn't you get it fixed? I don't think Subaru makes the electronic brake, they buy it from someplace that probably also sells it to other manufacturers.

If your regular brakes don't work when you are rolling and the engine is off, you better get them fixed, too. I don't know all the behaviors of the hydraulic system of the brakes when the engine is off, but I think that applying and holding pressure will work better than pumping and hoping for the best.

Generally dislike all cars which is probably why I own a fleet of old steel lugged bikes for commuting 7-8 months of the year. Much easier to work on old quality steel fujis and treks.

Still I consider my 2007 2.5 basic to be reliable/above average regarding startings, strandings and running. Quality of the car build/parts after 7 years is average. I have no illusions about other brands though as many use same parts suppliers and that is where quality seems to have downhill across all brands. I doubt the camry of today would go 165k with only 3 brake jobs, one axle and one ball joint repair like the 92 I owned for years.

Would I buy another subaru when the time comes? If I am still stuck in the snow belt, then would consider. I do wonder if the Indiana plant and American part suppliers are an issue for the outback --- not sure if the forester is still built entirely in Japan but would probably buy vs outback if another subaru ever happens. I did find it very strange that Toyota decided not to renew Camry contract with Indiana plant esp since they own a decent % of fuji heavy. Again it made me wonder if perhaps there is some quality control issues there, would love to see the warranty work traces back to plant of origin, but doubt that data ever makes it out to public sources. No matter to SOA though as their record sales probably means more production capacity is needed in Indiana.

I spent 12yrs living on a steep street in San Francisco. What cracks me up is that at least once week often times 2-3 times a week we had someone's car roll and end up getting really friendly with someone elses car. 99.99% of the time they were all old school hand pull parking brakes which were never pulled hard enough by ahem women to hold the car. My wife and mother included!

They both love the electronic parking brake on their new Subarus. **** grandma now says she will never consider buying another car that didn't have an electronic parking brake.

Simply put the failure rate of the old school parking brakes is VERY HIGH due to improper use OR in ability to pull them tight enough to hold the car. I've read about two people complaining about the Subaru E-parking brake and one of them is suspected of hitting the hill holder not the parking brake given how fast people complain about funny transmission behavior or loud exhaust on cold mornings here I would say that the E-parking brake is not an issue and for all the Women Folk something they want. As the one who often had to go out and pull on the parking brake hard or go release it for said women folk I will be first to say the E-parking brake was a very smart move on Subarus part.

Help I Hate My Car

So, I don’t know if this is the place to be but, I just bought a 2014 Subaru outback and I hate it. My problem is I don’t want to hate it. My daily commute is ~125mil a day. I want to love my car but there are things on this car that make me want to light it on fire. I’ll give you some examples and maybe someone can help. I bought this car because people that own then love them. Maybe all my other cars were just really good.
1.) It gets no ware near the 24-30mil/gal. I’m averaging 23mil/gal (it’s the 4cilander with the CVT transmission )
2.) It sucks in the snow! My last few cars were front wheel drive so maybe this is how all-wheel drive works but it is squarely going straight and its ability to turn is not good. I will give it that is starts from a stop well and once it starts sliding you can steer out of it well but I feel like its always sliding.
3.) The automatic starter from the factory is a joke! Really people laugh at me when I tell them that the car turns off as soon as I open the door.
Anyway, there’s more but let’s see if anyone can help be with these.
Please help I want to love this car.

Willing to bet you hate your commute, and no car will help. But you can improve things with that car, at least a little bit...

Your MPG will be best during steady speed driving 50-60mph. If you're hitting it at 75 on the freeway, you're not going to hit the EPA numbers. If you're in stop-and-go, it will be even worse than that. Only so much you can do there.

Regarding snow- get different tires. The ones they give you from the factory are not good for snow. Not kidding at all here, different tires will make you think it is a different car entirely.

As far as the remote start goes- If you want the kind that leaves the engine running while you climb in, you can get an aftermarket unit installed.

The real money pit for me were Renaults and Fiats in the 60's...but then again, most of my later cars were new and I always sold them, when warranty expired...
