Hi...I have 2004 Outback and am VERY technically challenged. The problem I have is that there is an audible knocking sound on start up (hot and cold)but not whilst running. Have the big end bearings gone?? Can I rectify or cure this??Any ideas?? I am unable to do any major work as I do not have the expertise or tools to do so.
Cheers
Rob

need a better description.

tapping when started that goes away when warm is piston slap and fortunately enough can be completely ignored.

if it's rod bearings the noise won't go away when warm and it needs repaired - usually via short block or long block (engine) replacement. eventually the rod lets loose and you'll have a hole in your block and oil everywhere under the hood. makes for fun carnage.

timing belt tensioner can knock loudly too....usually worse under load, not idling. that would be notably driver side front of the engine behind that black cover.
