Hello Everyone. I recently moved to Sweden and brought my 2005 Outback 2.5i wagon with me. I found out when I tried to register the car that my American trailer hitch isn't accepted in Europe. I purchased a Thule trailer hitch for my year and model of car but the hole patterns are all wrong. I called Subaru to find out if there were differences in the chassis on the '05 Outbacks sold in Europe and those sold in America. The customer rep. said there was a difference but couldn't give me any more information. Does anyone know if there is a European standard trailer hitch and wiring that will work with my '05 Outback from the U.S.?

I thought that they sent (or I ordered) the wrong hitch as well, but the model on the hitch indicates it is for the 2005 Outback (actually it says it fits models from 04 -09). The trouble is that Subaru's sold in Sweden are all built in Japan, while Subaru's sold in the U.S. are built in the U.S. I'm worried there may be some structural differences, even if it's just hole patterns etc. I'm also wondering if I have some other unpleasant surprises waiting for me in the future.

I noticed another thread along these same lines as well: http://www.subaruoutback.org/forums/61-general-discussions/7371-usa-vs-european-models.html

Anyone have further advice?

This thread (http://www.subaruoutback.org/forums/61-general-discussions/40136-how-much-wear-tear-car-when-pulling-2500-lbs-trailer-2500-mile-stretch.html) is also about an American Outback towing in Europe. The car apparently has a U-Haul hitch, which I would think is the American one for the car (probably was on the car before moving to Europe) and there's no mention I can recall of it not being acceptable.

The OP (outbackendurosx) is still active here; send a PM.

The onlything that would be a possible issue is the Euro trailer tongue. But those can be replaced with an American one for super cheap and buying the receiver for the trailer is simple. It will fit in a shoe box for shipping.
