Can't give you an accurate volume, but estimate .5-.6 cubic feet. Depth shouldn't be an issue for most speakers, but since I had the box wrapped/boxed on Friday, I can't run down an measure it... I flush mounted the speaker, so if you subtracted 3/4" from an imaginary line drawn from front-to-back in the cargo space in line with the hatch opening, and measure to the back of the cubbie/compartment you'll get a fairly accurate depth. The sub sits virtually in the middle of the cubbie indent - which you should be able to see from these photos: http://www.subaruoutback.org/forums/109-gen-3-2005-2009/45159-2008-outback-subwoofer.html

Should also note that modifying the box to regain the 3/4 from the flush mount wouldn't be all that difficult. Simply cut out a 3/4 spacer ring and glue it into the recess. You could also change the carpet color for less than $20.
