Hello, total newbie...i was a wondering tho if there is a compatable fuel filler neck from another model (i have 99 impreza outback) that i can pull from the junkyard? At my local pick and pull there is a 98 legacy outback...and the dorman models from the autozone for those two cars look very similar on the internet and are very close in model #....any help would be great

thank you in adance

if it looks the same it will probably work.

things to be sure are the same:
-bends in hose for correct routing
-diameter so it will seal properly
-length. might be ok with too long and can cut it but too short will be a waste of time.
thanka

Kool, I will post any sort of result in the next coupla days.
I had to replace the filler neck on my 1995 legacy, its not hard, but I am not so sure the legacy neck will fit the impreza.
Wanting to replace the filler neck, please help!

Hey guys I am thinking of replacing my filler neck, which one is right for our cars? There are 2 on RockAuto and I don't know which one is right for me.

One is a single vent and the other is a 2 vent filler neck.

Thanks for any help!

I bought mine from the dealer. Think it was 60-80 bucks. All the ones in the junkyard were rotted worse than mine. Take your time with the screws holding it in. Ended up having to drill them in. I also went to lowes and bought actual bolts to replace the Phillips screws

It's actually neither. I recently had to do mine (99 outback limited 2.5) and those don't fit. The one that I found that fits is to the impreza 2.5.

oh shoooooot. hey thanks for the info. I ordered this one: DORMAN 577086

I hope it's the same just the dorman brand.

thanks again.
Did a check engine light code lead you guys to consider this replacement? I'm getting a P0440. I don't want to throw parts at it so I might take it to smoke machine either way.

BTW 99OutbackLimited, it looks like we have the same car, right down to the color.
yeah that's what I have. and I live in the rustbelt area. I figured 60 or so dollars from rockauto is a better price than 122 for the exact same part from advance auto.

Don't forget to get the valve at the top. Most of the time they are rotted away and don't come with the replacement necks. It's looks like this/ you can get one here: Spectra Premium FNA04 - Fuel Tank Filler Neck Adaptor | O'Reilly Auto Parts

Will do, thanks alot 99OutbackLimited! I have never seen that, can I ask ya 2 quick questions please: is that the valve that opens when you fill up and all the fumes will go down into the intake and where is it located on the car?

These two links are very helpful:

The valve is located near the top of the filler neck. It will be very easy to spot where it goes because there will be two welded screws sticking out with a big hole in the middle of an odd shape.

Yeah it did. Take off your passenger side rear wheel (by the fuel door). If you look to the left of the suspension, you will see a large plastic piece jutting out that is attached by two or three hex/phillips head screws. Note that these may break when you try to get them out but they are only attached to the filler neck so if you are replacing it, no biggie. When you take the plastic off be ready for tons of dirt to come out. I probably had roughly 4-5 pounds of very hard/ solid brick-like dirt come out. After you clear off the dirt, you will be able to see if you have a hole somewhere. My filler neck was literally head together by the dirt.... when I took it out, it came out in 4 pieces. :crying: Make sure to note where your fuel lines run to in regards to the neck and valve so you put it back together correctly.

It is also recommended to take the plastic off once a year or maybe when you rotate your tires and clean the crud out that builds up behind it. Hopefully this will prevent future issues and make the filler neck last longer.

Yeah JoeyDB it looks like it! Although I'm jealous of the 5-speed. Mines automatic. :(

Do you have the leather seats and winter package as well?

thank you so much for all the help and info.
Thanks for the outline 99 Outback Limited! Yes, I have the leather seats and the winter package. Those heated seats have been mighty nice so far this winter.

Word of warning, if you have the winter package, make sure you add zero deductible liability for windshields if your auto insurance offers it. Apparently replacing this particular windshield costs close to $400!
