I've only had my Outback XT for a couple months and have questioned how anybody was getting freeway mileage over 20mpg UNTIL this weekend when I took off my ski rack & cross bars. I assumed that the rack was costing me a couple MPG, but I went from 19-20 freeway up to 26 this weekend. Much higher delta than I had expected.

Makes me think twice about always having a rack up (skis in winter and bikes in summer). Since the crossbars are easy enough to take off and on, I'll just throw them on when I need them.

I've also noticed that the mileage at ~60 is MUCH better than at ~70. Slowing down a bit can make big changes, not that I take advantage of that very often. My stage 1 tune seems to have helped the mileage a bit as well which the opposite of what I expected.

Aero drag. It is your enemy.
And with aero drag, speed squared is your MPG enemy,
and speed cubed is your drivetrain load (stress) enemy.

...no free lunch,
