Hey Guys,

I've got a new noise from my 2008 outback 2.5i. When I start up the car on a cold morning, I am hearing a grind/screech sound for about 1 second as the engine fires. Im thinking it may be the starter solenoid sticking...

The sound is more common on cold starts after sitting overnight.

Any other suggestions?

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Bryan

several folks have seen this recently including me. The concensus is, the starter is not releasing form the flywheel quickly.

if it persists, there could be damage. Some folks have specualted rebuilding the solenoid/starter with new solenoid contacts and re-greasing moving parts would help.

I have decided to let this slide this year and see if it's worse next winter. So far, I have only experienced it twice when temps were <25 degs or so. Not common here so, maybe only experience a few more times til spring.

Hmmm, just as I thought.

Seems there is no consensus on the best method to repair...

Would putting in a new starter fix the problem, or will it still persist with the cold weather?

All help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
