I have a 2015 Outback with electric lift hatchback. Last summer I had the lift mechanism replaced because it was clicking - it was replaced under warranty. Today I heard a humming noise when it was in the garage - it seemed to come from the drivers side rear panel - where i assume the lift mechanism is located. I raised and lowered the tailgate, thinking that is was not closed properly. This also happened about a month ago and all I did was raise and lower the tailgate and noise stopped immediately. Not this time. However, I went out the garage again - about 20 minutes later and the noise stopped. My concern is having the battery run down. Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks.

If I'm not mistaken it's a normal function of an emissions self-test. I have a `14 Outback and mine does it, too. Described in the owner's manual.

Indeed.

Noise from under the vehicle
NOTE
You may hear a noise from under the
vehicle approximately 5 to 10 hours
after the engine is turned off. However,
this does not indicate a malfunction.
This noise is caused by the operation
of the fuel evaporation leakage checking
system and the operation is normal.
The noise will stop after approximately
15 minutes.
