I have had 6 Subies (so far). They were purchased in this order.

1986 GL FWD wagon
2002 Outback Limited wagon
1998 Legacy L wagon
2004 Legacy 35th Anniv. sedan
1997 Legacy L wagon
2005 Outback 2.5i wagon

The 1986 was purchased for $100 when I was living in DC. It had ZERO rust. I kept it as a second car for 2 yrs and hit a deer with it my second day at Van Bortel. I sold it for $300! Replaced with the 2002 OB Limited. Nothing really great to say about it. The 1998 was a winter beater that I bought for $500 and sold for $2500. The 2004 is my partners car. I replaced my 1999 9-3 with it. The 1997 was a gift for his sister when she had her baby. And I have the 2005. Oh, and this is all within the last 15 months!

*sigh*
I'm about 500 miles away from 150k right now...I don't know if I want this car to go forever cause I love it so much, or if I want it to die so I have an excuse to seriously look into getting an XT that I can't afford...

Two: we liked my wife's 2004 Forester XS so much, I went back to Subaru when it came time to trade in my 1997 Audi, and walked away the following week with a 2005 Outback 2.5i Limited.

Researched everything, and except for going Audi or Volvo, possibly Jeep, I couldn't find another car-like AWD vehicle with this storage space, fuel economy and features for a price even remotely close to the Outback.

I have owned a '98 Legacy GT sedan, a 2001 Legacy GT wagon, a 2002 Impresa WRX, and now have a 2004 H6 Outback wagon Anniversary Edition and a 2005 Legacy GT 5EAT sedan. I also have a 1987 Pontiac Fiero GT that I have spent the last 3 years restoring and showing. It took three second place trophies and two third place trophies in various shows in the East coast.

my subarus

My first Subaru was a 1987 GL wagon, purchased in a hurry used in 1998, after we killed our '90 Firefly( good car, great mileage but not up to my aggressive highway driving). The GL was quite an improvement in cargo space, similar in performance and fuel economy. Got rid of it when I lost use of one arm and had to go to an automatic trans. It still ran, but was struggling. A potential buyer was pulled over during a test drive, when the cop became concerned about the belching smoke. No sale there.
After that I became determined to get an Outback, but suffered along an inherited mini-van (yuk) and a bland but sensible Saturn
for reasons of economy (the Subaru salesman looked at me and said " you can't afford a Subaru". He was right.)
But patience paid off and my wealth increased and used OBs got cheaper.
I found a 98 Limited that I could afford last month. woo-hoo!Sorry for the essay, but there's nothing on TV tonight.
P.S. My uncle, who has just picked up a 2004 Forester, has had nothing but Subarus for the last 20 yrs.

7 Subarus:

1. 1991 Legacy 2.2 GX Sedan (auto)

2. 1994 2.0 GL Legacy Wagon (5 sp)

3. 1994 2.2 GX Legacy Wagon (auto)

4. 1998 2.5 Legacy Limited Wagon (5 sp)

5. 1998 2.5 Outback (5 sp)

6. 2000 2.5 Outback (auto)

7. 2002 3.0 H6 Outback VDC Limited (auto)

Which were the best ones? - #1 and #7.

#2 was returned to dealer about 12,000km after repeated transmission problems that could not be rectified, and was replaced with #3.

#5 had the 'black box' replaced under warranty about 25,000km - at a cost I was told of $3,500 or thereabouts.
Forgot about adding my wifes - she has had two (which I guesss I half own??):

1996 Impreza 2.0 GX

and now has a:

2002 Impreza 2.0 Rxi

First was a 1980 U.S ski team Wagon I picked up for $200. I couldn't break it and put 205,000 miles on it then I bought a 1986 GL wagon and put 278,000 miles on it before trading it in for my 2000 Outback and when my wife was ready for a new car we bought a 2001 Forester and then I traded my 2000 Outback for a 2002 L.L. bean H-6. Our Subarus have been flawless. There may be cars out there with more gadgets, but dollar for dollar its hard to beat a Suby.:D

A Subaru was my first car and also is my current car. Different years and levels of beatdown"ness". Certainly prefer my 05 wagon over the 85.

Jeez, there's some impressive subaru loyalists in this list. I'm on merely #2 Outback:

1997 2.5L Legacy Outback Limited
2005 2.5L Outback XT Limited

Hopefully will add 2009 Outback Hybrid Turbo Limited at the end of my lease :)

We just leased our TENTH Subaru in November. We traded the 2005 Legacy 2.5GT wagon for a 2006 B9 Tribeca Limited 5 Passenger with Navigation. So, here's the list:

1986 GL wagon FWD 5 speed Mica Red (hit deer)
1998 Legacy L wagon 5 speed Mica Red (winter beater SOLD for 5X's what I paid for it!)
1997 Legacy L wagon 5 speed Mystic Blue(gave to Ian's sister as a baby shower gift. She still drives it.)
2002 Outback Limited 5 speed wagon (worst Subaru I ever owned)
2004 Legacy 35th Anniversary Edition sedan 5 speed Mystic Blue (traded for Legacy 2.5GT sedan)
2005 Legacy 2.5GT sedan 5EAT Obsidian Black (traded for Legacy 2.5GT wagon)
2005 Outback 2.5i wagon 5 speed Obsidian Black (trade for Outback 2.5XT)
2005 Legacy 2.5GT wagon 5 speed Brilliant Silver (traded for Tribeca)
2005 Outback 2.5XT wagon 5 speed Obsidian Black
2006 B9 Tribeca 5 passenger Limited w/NAVI Titanium Silver

And to think, my next car may not be a Subaru!!! My 4/10 of a mile commute has made me realize that having an Outback and a Tribeca is overkill. I may (or may not) replace the Outback with a summer car. Thinking of a '97-99 BMW 3 series convertible. We'll see.

How bizarre."

Someone at work just gave me a ride in a 330 (I think) convertible. The top of the windshield was almost at my eye level. But it was fun to ride with the top down, hatless ... in January ... in Ohio ... haven't ridden with the top down since about 1978, and that was in a '62 Galaxie.

IF I had the room and the $$$ (BIG IF) I would keep both Subies and pick up a BMW. I guess they are running at Manheim for between $6600 and $7500 for a 318ci and between $8000 and $9500 for a 328ci. We'll see. I am not all that interested in carrying a mortgage and THREE car payments!
