So I called my local dealer to inquire about an oil & filter change on my 2013 Outback. He said & I quote "$72 for a synthetic change and it is mandatory to use synthetic? I actually read the manual and it says "synthetic" is recommended not mandatory. Think I will be using the OEM oil filter and buying some Mobil one and change it myself.
Perhaps I should have been my diligent in researching the in's and out's of changing oil on the 2013 Subaru 4 cylinder. By the way, the manual says this is true for only the 2013 4 cylinder, but not the 6 cylinder.

The FB series engine requires 0w20, which is by definition a synthetic oil.

mandatory 2013 on. Optional 2010-2012.

I just paid 55 for an oil change for mine. 72 is high. They charge 75 including a tire rotation for my future changes.
