Update. Just been quoted 12 hours labour by local garage to change the inner tie rods. Looks like a normal removal tool doesn't fit in the space around the inner ball joint and the whole subframe has to come off!!!! Has anyone had these done on a 2011? There must be a tool that will fit, surely?

I suspect there is a tool that will fit, but I have read at least 1 post that reported having trouble finding the correct size insert.

I have also read one post of someone using a pipewrench for this job - sry I have no other info or experience doing this.

maybe search youtube and check ultimatesubaru.org as well?

Doh! Just realised that putting the wheels at full lock allows much better access to the inner knuckle, so tool should be ok. Makes you wonder why the garage mechanics didnt notice

Yes it does...

They didn't notice, because they don't know how to do their job.

BTW, I don't ever use a special tool. I use a plumbers pipe wrench and just grab the ball socket housing. Easy Peasy

My turbos require the removal of a subframe-tie-plate. Same as if you were going to remove the steering rack. Then the access is still only in one specific spot, on either side.

After all that, easy peasy.
