Well.. I've been wanting the spoiler that comes on the 00MY LL Bean Outbacks because when I drive on dusty roads, my rear window is completely covered. I was going to get that tinted plastic deflector... but...

I found the rear spoiler for my color 'cream white' as they sold it on Subaruparts.com for $74 already painted.

Anyways.. the spoiler came NIB with instructions, hardware, templates.

Sounds like an easy job right?

Nope.. the templates were about 1/2" or so off on the holes for the mounting of the spoiler... so I had to slot the holes that I drilled.. just so the spoiler could go on. :(

Anyways.. the finished product is good... it's on straight now. What was supposed to take about 30 minutes turned into about a 90 minute job.

I like the way it looks.. let's hope it helps keep the dust off my rear window.

Sounds like a great price you got. But I think the dust deflector would keep more dust off the rear window than the spoiler, however the spoiler is so much more attractive.

Pics??

Last week I installed a rear dust deflector onto my my OB. I live on a dusty road and the back gets pretty dirty pretty fast.

Thought it would be a straight forward job like the gate bar I installed last year (just line up, drill a couple of holes and then put the whole thing together) but the instructions on the deflector were vague and confusing. I had to look at the instructions for the 2003 deflector install to get better info and figure out that I needed a special type of rivet like gun.

I live on a small island and the chances of something like that were pretty slim, however I found a guy who does body work and it turns out he had the right tool. I had already drilled the holes and so for $5 he put the expanding screws in. The rest was easy.

For some reason, I thought those were standard on Outbacks. My '98 has it, and I don't know how much it helps. In the winter all I can see is the exhause swirling around the back window until the car warms up. Don't know if the spoiler helps or hurts this.

For my dusty road it helps a lot. The air flow over the roof is forced down the back to counter the backdraft that curls up from underneath and from the sides of the vehicle. This backdraft is how the dust collects onto the rear window.

On my road (daily during the summer) my rear window can become fully covered with dust to the point that I can't see out the back. So far the deflector has kept the window clear of almost all dust since I put it on. I just have to use the wiper a little more often to clear the rain that gets forced down onto the window with the air flow.

The dust deflector and "spoiler" were/are sold as options. Of course on some packages they might come as standard.

How is it possible that the OEM templates were screwed up? That worries me!

I'm considering buying one of thse from subaruparts.com within the next month because their stock of Timberline Green Pearl spoilers is now "yellow" aka "low." So, I better get one before they sell out.

the OEM templates were a little bit off... it wasn't that big of a deal. the spoiler is actually a great deal that even if you had a bodyshop put it on for you.. you'd still be doing alright on the price. :)

Questions regarding ill-fitting template

Quazar-

Could you elaborate on the template that was off. I just purchased a spolier and looked at things and it looks like things won't line up.

Is it the outer holes that are off?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I had a hitch mounted rack and it cleared with no problems. I am not sure about the trunk mounted rack but it is open in the center, so I would guess it would clear as well.

I saw a guy who had the trunk mounted one mounted over the spoiler, i would never do this but it seemed to hold ok. They must be mounted well.
