Both keyless access fobs on my 2014 SAP outback are showing signs that the battery may need replacing. The service manual makes this seem like a relatively simple job, but before I dive in and do it myself, I wanted to ask if there are any gotchas. I have this nightmare vision in my the key will need to be programmed with some special tool if the battery is removed.

Yes. DIY.
Batteries are available almost anywhere. I don't recall the cell size, but it should be in the owner's manual.
I didn't even have to re-sync the fob after putting in the new battery. It just worked.

Battery replacements in all key fobs we have owned is indeed relatively simple. No rocket science or reprogramming involved.

Never say never, just to be safe don't take (an hour) too long. Get everything ready/unpacked and swap, there shouldn't be a problem.
