i just got my k & n air filter for my 12 outback 2.5 and when i opened my filter housing i have two filters in it. do i need to take both out or leave the thin one in? and what does the thin one do?

Ya the regular filter, then it has a thin like pre filter which is like a cloth material enclosing something. Maybe something to do with pzev emissions

I just checked aem website. It is a charcoal filter part of emissions and said not to be removed. Thanks for the help. I now know to get the aem next time. Not sure if i feel like returning k&n.
