I was able to fit
5 pairs of carver skis
2 pairs of powder skiis
6 pairs of ski boots
6 sets of poles
snow shovel
3 sleds
5 helmets
5 pairs of walking snow boots

but more importantly keep it all organized with a simple modification.

$2 worth of 2x4 and 2x2 and $3 worth of rubber weather stripping. I used rubber vs vynel. it was 50 bests more but was stickier.

Goals: A. held still so they dont rub / damage each other and other things during 1500 mile road trip.
B. hold as much as possible.
C. be organized so packing/ unpacking at resort parking lot is easier/ faster.

In the tree pictures above you can notice several things.
1. the rubber sealant I used.
2. the skinny "shoes" I added. This put the weight of the skis directly on the bars with out bending the plastic. The wider 2x4s put 100% of the weight on the plastic contours of the rack. I also added the rubber foam here. in 1500 miles it never even slipped.
3. lots of drilled holes. I wasn't sure how I would strap them down.
4. The heaight of the rack was supposed to make roof for boots on the bottom then helmets on top of skiis.

You can see here the roof top box partially packed. Boots on bottom, skis on the rack. Later I put helmets on the skiis but... It was a super tight fit so I took the top layer off the wood as seen in the work bench pic. It fit much better.

Nice job! Good use of space and protection for your stuff at the same time.

Question: are the skis secured to the rack, or are they held is place by gravity and the things packed around and on them?

The wooden rack is secured to the roof top box but the skis are only held on by gravity. They dont move at all. The weather Stripping I got from home depot is black rubber. I thought it would be stickier then the vynal. Then I put then in with the ski brakes locked together so that if I slam on the brakes the top on can not slide forward.
