Is it normal for an Outback (mines 2010) to have very loud and frequent catalytic converter "chatter" when the car is warm and in idle and also for a few minutes after shut down? I never heard anything like it. Thanks.

I think I will do that. The sound isnt the heat shield noise issue, its the "popping and pinging" that cars normally do when shut off, its just louder and more frequent.

Sounds like normal metal expansion and contraction. The cat is designed to light off very fast to reach 1500 degrees F asap. Rapidly heating metal will snap and pop.
