Hi All,

I'm just trying to make sure I get the right part for my car (2005 Outback 2.5i Limited 5MT with California emissions), because the 2005 California stuff gets kind of crazy. I can post the VIN if people need it to make the right call. My exhaust is super rusted out at the Y-Pipe. I tried patching it a little, but it's still leaking and I think I should just replace the whole thing.

If I go to the official Subaru website and look up parts by my VIN (and then go to the 2005 U5 exhaust diagram), it shows two part numbers: 44200AG09B and 44299AG00A. Of those 2 numbers, I'm pretty sure the 00A won't fit because searching other places shows it as being without California emissions.

So great, 44200AG09B. My problem is that when I search on less official Subaru parts sites, I also come up with 2 numbers: 4200AG09B and 4200AG10B.

The description for 4200AG09B is "2.5 LITER, W/CALIFORNIA, 2005, W/O OUTBACK WAGON" while for 4200AG10B it's "2.5 LITER, W/CALIFORNIA, 2005, W/OUTBACK WAGON"

Based on that, I would assume I want the one that says "With Outback Wagon" instead of without it. If I search for 4200AG10B on the official Subaru site, it shows up as being a Legacy / Legacy Wagon part, but not an Outback part.

At this point I think 4200AG09B is probably the right part even though it says "W/O OUTBACK WAGON," since it shows up on both sites, but I wanted to ask the forum here.

Thanks

I realize this is probably not super helpful... but first move out of California. Then get on Amazon and buy the Bosal pipe. Its $123 with free shipping and will be there in 3 days. Go ahead and buy the California gaskets for the mufflers. They are slightly more expensive but much better quality. I just did the y-pipe on my 2005. The resonator was round instead of large and flat like the OEM and the one in your picture. Good luck.. I had trouble like you trying to figure out the correct part.. mine fits and the prices was right... not sure if its CA complaint or not but I live in Ohio....

I live in Massachusetts. This isn't an issue of passing a CARB inspection in CA. This is just an issue of the part physically fitting. The exhaust for 2005 CA emissions Outbacks have more catalytic converters and O2 sensors than the regular 2005s, so everything fits differently.

Thanks for trying to help though.

scoopburt,

I'm not sure if you were trying to say that your car has CA emissions. I would love to try the Bosal 286-557 for U5/CA emissions vehicles. I haven't ordered that one because I've heard very mixed things about whether it fits or not.

That pipe you're looking for has nothing to do with emissions. Never mind CA or federal. Only thing that matters for California emissions is the cat mainly and any other emissions equipment.

Now unless being CA emissions makes the cat physically bigger, there shouldn't be any difference in the two pipes besides being for a sedan or a wagon.

Get the one for Legacy Wagon. It's the same thing. Or do like someone else said and go on Rockauto or something. Itll be cheaper.

The Bosal pipe is not good. Even if it fits, the resonator will develop a rattle very quickly and drive you nuts. I have ordered that PN twice and neither fit without welding modifications.

From Subaru: They are different part numbers for california and federal emissions for the mid pipe. They may be slightly diffterent lengths.

Further to u5 vs federal, my guess is the reason for 2 part numbers for U5 "w and w/o" outback is that 2005 there was a Legacy Wagon and an Legacy Outback Wagon. the legacy (non outback) exhaust may hang lower since it has rear exit mufflers????

The FEDERAL part for bosal is BOSAL 286975. I happen to have one sitting here, will try to figure out what the difference is between BOSAL 286975 and 287557.

I also have a Bosal 287-557 with the Resonator removed and with the muffler flanges cut off. Yours for the taking (in VT) if you want to convert to a single muffler setup.

Thanks WantAnOutback,

I ordered Bosal 286-557 from Amazon before I saw your post. Amazon says it's returnable if it doesn't fit.

I might try it out if it fits. Otherwise I'm pretty sure that 4200AG09B is the part I'm looking for. 4200AG10B seems to be for the Legacy Outback Wagon, like you were saying.

I might be interested in picked up that part in Vermont. How far up the state are you? I'd be coming from a bit west of Boston.

Update:

I got the Bosal midpipe in the mail. It actually ended up fitting - mostly. It's definitely a little bit shorter than the old pipe, but I was barely able to get the mufflers attached. It's leaking from a bad weld where the resonator and the pipe meet though.

I ordered the real Subaru part from a online store run but a dealership one state over. They e-mailed me today to say that the part is actually too big for them to ship out, so I just re-ordered the part for pickup from a local dealership.

That's a shame. I have the Bosal pipe and it fit properly and had 3000 miles on it no problems

We just took my son's 2005 Outback to a local independent garage for A/C, brake and exhaust work. A/C & brakes were fine, but they picked up 2 different midpipes and neither one would fit: both were "about 4 inches too long". They said they may have to order from Subaru but preferred not to due to the cost (this being a 14 year old car). They welded the worst hole and left the rest until we can get this figured out.

After we left, I did note on cars101 that Subaru changed engines starting with 2006, so the 2005 is the only Gen 3 with that engine. I'm wondering if the various independent parts catalogs just lump all of 2005-2009 together even though there's a different fit due to the engine change.

Anybody know for sure?

Edit: This being an '05, I suppose it could also be federal vs. Cali emissions.

A difference of 4 inches sounds like they ordered parts for the regular 2005 instead of the California emissions 2005. The CA one has an extra catalytic converter so the mid pipe attaches a few inches further back.

FYI, I took the brand new Walker resonator pipe from my 2007, added 4" just after the flange to the rear Cat and put it on my 2005. Both of my cars are Federal cars but my 2005 needs a shorter resonator pipe and the OEM one came with that huge flat resonator in the pic above..... my 2007 has 2 cats, my 2005 has 3, both Federal cars... good luck finding an aftermarket donut gasket to fit properly.
