In the US, Subaru lists the tow rating of the Outback as 2700lbs (2019 2.5) and states that a trailer weight greater than 1000lbs requires trailer brakes. Although Subaru offers a hitch and trailer light wiring, they do not offer any sort of trailer brake controller. I realize that there are aftermarket brake controllers, but it seems to me that Subaru is misleading customers by rating the car for 2700lbs when they can't supply a car outfitted to tow more than 1000lbs.

It's sort of like if Subaru advertised the car as capable of 150mph, but then only sold it with 100mph rated tires.

I think it’s the lawyers talking. There are too many of them trying to earn a living by making rules and laws that make them rich.
