I just bought a 2001 outback with the cold weather package. It has 185k on it but feels solid as a rock. I love it. Had to order a new key fob for it because the old one was broken. The odometer still shows with the key out and doors closed, is this normal? It's a manual if that makes a difference. Thanks

Thanks a ton. I was worried that it may be a mess up and a drain on the battery. I've been looking over the forum and you guys seem very knowledgeable and friendly. Glad to be here and very happy to own this great vehicle.

The odometer does drain a little power to display, but consider this: a digital watch needs it's battery replaced every few months. The odometer has similar power needs, but is attached to a battery with a thousand times the capacity. It's a bit like trying to drink a lake with a straw. It can be done, but it will take a really long time.
