Night/Day mode in navigation system display

Hi all
I'm a new member hoping to get some advice with a navigation system problem in my 2011 Outback 3.6R. About 5 months after I got my car I noticed that the daytime map would not switch to night mode on getting dark or going through tunnels, despite having the user settings on auto.

My headlights turn on entering tunnels and turn off exiting, so why (assuming some kind of external light sensor is involved) is the navigation display not switching? I keep it on night mode all the time now, because driving in the evenings the daytime map display is too bright.

I'd take it into my dealer to look at, but they're only open M-F so I'd need to take time off work to do this.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

BTW - is there a firmware version update for the navigation system? is this only available (and installable) from authorized Subaru dealer service?

Hi Teflon Chook,

There are several controls that feed this. One of which is the dash light intensity control on the left side of the steering wheel. If you have it rolled up all the way to max (a detent position) it will override the day/night auto setting and leave it permenently on day. I believe that this is the source of your issue.

taborekle,
You just made my day - your suggestion solved the issue. I no longer have to go crazy change the day and night modes back and forth all the time.

Thanks much,

is there a way to a way to turn the light setting all the way up to bright but wo initiating the override function of the night mode for navi? I like my dash lights bright but don't want it on day mode all the time.
