My front wheel bearing got quite loud without any play or looseness, and it wasn't getting tight or hot.
Mine broke the rule of the 'bad bearing gets louder when it's on the outside of the turn', it actually got quieter with increased load.
I had to use a mechanics stethoscope against the strut spring while spinning the wheel with both front wheels in the air and the trans in neutral before I could say which wheel bearing was bad.
