I own a 2001 outback and recently i started hearing what sounded like wheel bearing noise coming from the left front wheel. The noise increases with speed. I lifted the car up and checked for vertical play (top to bottom) but their was no play instead the play was side-to-side even though i replaced the inner tie rod a year ago. What could be causing the noise if there is no vertical play? Has anyone experienced such a contradicting event, and if so what did it end being? Thanks

Wheel bearings often make noises without any apparent slack in the bearing itself. In addition, brake components and the backing plate can make noises that are speed sensitive.

What makes you think it sounds like a bad wheel bearing?

Perhaps a description, or recording, of the sound might be recognized by others who have had the same symptoms.
It sounds like the rumbling of a train wheel on a rail. Best i can describe.
