I have a 2011 Outback 2.5 non turbo. I bought it with 95K and it has always used oil. Sometimes a quart in 750 miles and sometimes less. no smoke... no leaks. Subaru is NO HELP... I just learned to live with it.

However I have 170K now and wanted to replace the spark plugs, There is oil all over the boot. Is that normal?

not unusual to need valve cover gaskets on an older car - that would include 'tube seals' likely where oil is getting on the plug boots.

a new PCV valve might help reduce oil loss.

Thank you... ordered the gasket and seals. Crossed fingers that it works and this is my first stab at it.

Dealing with oil burning on other Subaru here is what I learned. Oil burning not linear - older the oil more you burn it, you can cut oil consumption by a lot by changing oil more often. Some oil brands result in more oil burning. From major brands I tried, Penzoil resulted in least and Mobil 1 most oil burning. Your exhaust is much hotter than it would otherwise be without oil burning, it can melt things around it, like bumpers.
