Were you ever able to figure out what was causing this leak? I am having the same problem with my 2006 outback. I have replaced the pcv valve and have been watching the power steering, but neither seem to be the problem. Please let me know!
Oil on the top is usually tracked back to one of the following:

AVLS oil control valves
oil pressure emergency warning switch
head gaskets

And it's often that last one. All you can do is clean it and keep looking at it until you catch a fresh leak before it has had a chance to make a confusing mess.

Same issue on my 05 OB, fluid collecting on top of passenger side engine recesses.
I know I have HG (and significant valve cover) leaks on the driver side.
Already replaced the PS pump as it was leaking pink AT fluid in the recesses just below pump and fluid level was dropping in the reservoir. That is now resolved.
This is definitely engine oil. While there is dried old oil around the sensors, I don't see fresh oil except in the recesses.
OP (or others with 2005) did you ever figure this out?
At 200,000 miles, I will likely drive it till the wheels fall off since the current value of the car doesn't justify the cost of HG and mounting other repairs needed.
