I own an 05 XT which I think is the EJ255 DOHC. Anyway, the oil pump went out last night and within a few seconds I could here the unhappy slappy of a loose connecting rod. The questions I have at this point are: -

What is the best way to assess the damage, i.e. how far do I need to tear down the engine? Will pulling the oil pan give me a good view or do I need to split the engine?

How long will a complete rebuild take me to do on my own? I am fairly mechanical but have never rebuilt an engine - I have split tractors, replaced all sorts of other parts on various cars including the turbo and timing belt etc on this XT.
