Saw this one at the trailhead today.....
Hopefully ok! Looked like they backed out too far and slid over the edge.

2003-2004 outback sedan H4 limited. black mirror cap, does not belong.

It is most likely a 2003 H6 based on the wheels and the badge you can just barely make out on the grille. This reminds me of when I flipped my 2003 H6 only that my accident was in the middle of winter with a few inches of snow everywhere and I completely flipped it upside down.

Amazingly my Outback was able to be fixed, resold, and driven an additional 220,000 miles. How do I know? Because the owner traded that car in to my former dealership and bought two new Outbacks from us. Good deals too!

and if this sedan and your cloth seat beast had VDC. ...such things would never happen.
I don't think VDC would have helped much if this vehicle was backed over the edge that the photographer was standing on. Newer RAB technology, maybe.

BTW @Shark_911 - USFS trails are open where you're located?
