The online parts sites like NAPA list only a 2.5L engine for the 2002 Subaru Outback. I picked up a filter at NAPA for an oil change, turned out to be much smaller than the filter which was on the engine, I called NAPA & gave them the filter number for the larger filter and they said it was for a 3.0L engine. Was the 3.0L actually available in 2002, or do I have a transplant power plant?

you can use a filter for a 3.0 subaru outback on a 2.5 car in the 2000-2004 US spec years.
filter is bigger with more media but the spec is the same.

I would not put a little 2.5 sized one on a 3.0 though.

napa online can suck, and the people at the counter may not know a subaru from a suzuki.

If you want to cost compare, plenty of real subaru dealers on ebay and amazon.
subaru dealer ones are typically blue or black cased made by "Tokyo roki"

what number do you have in position 6 of your VIN?

Position 6 - Engine types, varies by year. This can change yearly
2 is 2.0L turbo 4cyl; 6 is either 2.2L or 2.5L 4 cyl; 7 is a 2.5L turbo STi motor; 8 is a 3.0L 6 cyl.
