Our '96 Outback has clocked 145,000 mi. Looks good and runs great. We are the second owners of a very well maintained wagon.

I have a 1998 Outback with 200,200 miles on it as of this afternoon. I passed the 200k mark on Saturday. It was my dads car first so he was happy to see it is lasting so long.

Wow, that's impressive!

I just blasted through 14,000 Kms in my OBXT, while accelerating hard in third gear :)

My 96 Outback auto is holding up well at 156K miles. Gets 26mpg highway with plenty of power and pickup. No signs of HG failure so far. (fingers crossed)

HG failures in '96 and older are actually quite rare. It became a real problem starting in '97 and continued through '99 and into '00.
Consider yourself lucky!

With that said, I'd knock on wood every day if I were you. I sure did when I had my '97, ironically it was the timing belt that did me in at ~157k miles, not the HG!
Make sure your timing belt has been serviced at the proper interval!

:D

ME: White 97 Outback, 5 speed....149,000 miles
wife: Red 97 Outback, auto, 106,000 miles

Granted, we've bought them both recently, just picked mine up Friday, so most of the miles were put on by previous owners, but that's the approximate mileages.

I just sold my 97 OBW - 164,000 miles - to my sister in law in VT.

Her existing 97 OBW just suffered a HG failure at 244,000 miles. The engine was rebuilt at 144,000 so it lasted another 100K.

I did the HG at 140K, pre-emptively.

Not my car, but...

Friend of mine just traded in a 1998 Forester. 204,000 miles. Had a new shortblock at 70,000 miles.

Engine was overheating, I suspect BHG. Transmission was on the verge of letting go. Very hard shifts, if it decided to shift at all.

Traded in for a new Toyota Matrix. Oh well :)

as of today (january 2nd) it has 54,430 miles on it.

Heh, I spend a small fortune on gas when I average 30,000 miles a year.
