Ok, here is the sequence of events.
Took the 1996 Subaru Outback in to the mechanic. The problems listed were:
Multiple codes- P0505 idle malfunction, P0500 speed sensor, P0420 cat converter. Had throttle body and IAC valve cleaned. Had cleaner added to oil system. The car was running rough, wanted to stall out and had exhaust coming through the front. Now the only code showing up is P0420. We knocked the cat converters out so there is nothing left inside of them, replaced the front O2 sensor. The car shudders badly at idle and wants to stall. It seems to be worse in the summer heat and at low speeds/going uphill. At this point getting kind of tired of throwing money at this car. Any thoughts as to what the next step could be?

To add to this, last night we took the air filter cover off and put it back on. Now the car starts, revs up and then dies. Replaced the rear O2 sensor as well with no change.

rear O2 sensor is not used by the ECU for running the engine so it won't affect drivabiliy, emissions only.

sounds like a vacuum leak somewhere. spray starting fluid all over the ihtake and vacuum hoses around the engine while trying to start it.

has the timing belt ever been changed? it is nearly 10 years past due if it hasn't been replaced yet. (at best it's every 105,000 miles or 8 years) if it's a manual transmission then it has the Ej22 and has an ever shorter timing belt interval).
may be a slipped or compromised timing belt/pulley.
