First, I apologize if this is covered elsewhere on the forum. Do not flame me, I made a considerable attempt to search for this information before posting.

My question is, can regular power steering fluid be used in the power steering system? I realize that dextron 3 is preferred, I am merely wondering if anyone has had luck using standard ps fluid. I have 3 gallons of the stuff and would prefer to use what I got sitting around. Oddly enough I don't have a single quart of dex 3. Also have some ATF plus for chrysler transmissions. I just don't want to eat a rack or pump. Thanks for any help.

No.

Dex3 isn't "preferred", it's required.

Manufacturers require certain fluids for a reason. Switch if you really want to get rid of the power steering fluid, but be prepared to replace the rack, pump, and all the lines. :)
