Starting last fall I began to hear a seemingly random chime sound in my 2016 Outback. The sound is the same as an arriving elevator, or a fasten seat belts message on a plane. It usually sounded at random locations during a ride, but always sounded at about ten spots in my neighborhood.

Cutting to the chase: I traced it to the Navigation system, and a WARNING SIGN ALERTS tool. I did the following on the control screen:

MAP>MENU>MORE>SETTINGS>SOUND AND WARNINGS>WARNING SIGN ALERTS

At "WARNING SIGN ALERTS" either uncheck it totally or select personalized ranges of searching and notification.

This tool seems to present the Navigation system as a co-pilot, telling the driver about perceived dangers ahead. The technology may be not ready for prime time.
