Whenever I start my 2000 Outback with manual trans it makes a loud rattle or knocking sound for a couple seconds then it goes away. Whenever I change gears I hear the same sound. I've checked all the heat shields on the exhaust and none are loose. I did notice that were the front axles fit onto the transmission splines is loose on both sides. I can wiggle the axle bearing housing around quite a bit. Is this normal? I think the sound could be those banging around. I now plan on replacing both axles because I noticed both inner boots are torn and the grease is gone. The clutch feels like its slipping a little sometimes to. BTW the car has 178000 miles on it. Just got this car a month ago and I'm really frustrated with it already. Any help would be appreciated.
