rear fog lights

Winter and fog seems to be a good time to discuss this. Anyone use them and if so where, what and how is it mounted?

So, why are you installing rear fog lights again? This isn't England.

Budaru, I have read around, and cannot not find a definite answer on that either, I also read that a white LED behind a red lense uses more power than a red LED because it produces light on different spectrums that gets filtered out anyways by the colored lens. So in the case of brake lights, it would be better to use a red LED White LED through a red lens can look somewhat pinkish which i discovered when i shined my LED flashlight into the reflectors.

I will try to do cut the reflector open Friday evening, and take some pics of them with the lights in. I am still getting my garage squared away from my move.

Thank you sir, I'm looking forward to hearing from you. I already ordered a red led panel, following the advice on VLEDs and other web sites, so I guess I'll find out how that works.

I can guess how to open up the back of the reflector and install something there, but those LED arrays aren't weatherproof so I'm wondering how you did that. Any info you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

The VLed panels are bright enough. Have one of the 12 led 6watt panels to insert into the bumper reflectors. Light goes through very well. I will attempt to take a pic this week of the light in the reflector. Have tocut them open first

...take pics of the process you go through to do this. I would really like to see that. I have had that reflector out...it is very skinny

Kudos for the Jogo-man for doing it right. I can see a need myself during elk season when I drive up through winding mountain hwys.
I’ll need to read up on the latest regs, but last I read was they’re still illegal in USA/Japan. So the factory positions give you stealth mode. But if you’re going to use the L-Rear reflector position, IIRC (newish) euro TUV places it above bumper and off center to the left. Using other than red lights = cop magnet.<O

Effective but why isn’t it available here, same reason headlight levelers aren’t either – people don’t even know how to use roundabouts.

Here it is for Calif. Your State may have a different law(s)...

Meh, nothing illegal in free CO, no State inspections... and can have Class-3 full-auto assault rifles.

OMG they even specify that the switch has to lighted amber. Oops mine is red, keeping with the red lighting of the dash. Oh well

WOW - I must have it Calif. legal then - my switch for rear fog on my dash board is amber/yellow - and I did not really follow Calif. law - I thought, when my front fogs are yellow then my rear fog light switch must be yellow even though the fogs are red ... go figure!

I'm fairly certain you guys are safe....I've never heard of anyone being cited for a "fog light switch color" violation LOL

I agree. If there's a cop inside my car where he can see my fog light switch color, I've likely got much bigger problems.

Hoppyjr: Not really - after you roll down your window, followed by "your drivers license and registration, please" the fog switch is in plain view from the outside ...LOL... but, as Budaru said, chances to get cited for that "violation" are slim or none.....

The thing that troubles me about rear fogs is that on casual observation they just look like shorted out brake lights. It'd be nice if there was a really conclusive way to differentiate them from regular brake lights.

Euchre - when I drive drive with rear fog lights on I don't usually continuously apply brakes or have brake lights on at the same time (unless of course I am braking...)
So, actually they quite differentiate, from parking lights, while the car is slowly moving in the fog... at least that is my perception. Others may disagree....

I think you missed the point. Its not about when the brakes are actually applied, its about looking like one brake light is always on for some reason. That reason is fairly commonly a short. The worst case scenario for a single brake light on all the time would be someone who is already a moron for having only 1 working light left of the 3 they should, and they're riding it all the time. I see lots more of the former than the latter. In Oregon we can get a great deal of fog, so I see the value of having rear fogs.

I see your point now - you may be right although that "fog" light is more off the side, more closer to the center... but I can see that some folks may be thinking your way...or perhaps most of the folks on these shores? LOL... Anyway, I am happy with my rear fog lights location and installation...basically, copying EU OEM location on 2013 OBs there...
