With my car my remote stops working for 30 seconds anytime I use my hatch. If I open my hatch to bring a load before I unlock my doors I cannot unlock my doors. Likewise, if I close the hatch I cannot lock my car doors. Also, if my headlights are set in Auto mode, it sometimes prevents me from opening all of my doors with the remote, only the driver door.

Stupid, annoying, wish I could find a reason why this happens.

Have you fitted LEDs to your vehicle? In particular to the rear cargo light?

If so, put the standard incandescent globes back in & see it fixes the problem.

Altakid had something similar some time ago that we tracked down to the rear cargo light being replaced with an LED. See: https://www.subaruoutback.org/threads/key-fob-buttons-temporarily-unresponsive.422890/#post-4836794

BTW - there was a positive outcome to the above topic. Altakid tracked down a different LED that worked without causing any noticeable issues. It was this LED: https://www.sylvania-automotive.com/products/interior-and-exterior-bulbs/zevo-led/921_zevo.jsp

I do have an LED in there now but only recently. It has been doing this since I purchased the car even with the original bulbs.

One detail missing from the discussion above, does your problem occur with the smart key or any? My lift gate has given me no trouble at all, but I have the regular key.
Maybe there are more sensors in the system that uses the smart key, more things to go wrong...

We had the same issue and it was very frustrating. We took our 18 OB to the dealer several times and were given various user related reasons.

Turns out that our lift gate was not properly aligned and would "bump" when it opened and closed which would trigger some kind of failsafe to prevent damage. Local dealer re-aligned our lift gate and now it works close to 99% of the time.

Look at the spacing around your liftgate, especially around the tail lights. It should be very close to even on both sides. Also listen for a bump when you open and close, it is the gate catching on the latch as it bumps it laterally.

Fair enough. The reason why I suspected the LED in the cargo light of your Outback was because you mentioned “… remote stops working for 30 seconds anytime I use my hatch ...” which is the default time out period for the rear cargo light where it is dimmed (controlled by PWM).

The problem still could be in the cargo light circuit or the keyless entry control module circuit. For a quick initial test; reduce the interior lights timeout period to 0 instead of 30 seconds, then see if the remote works as it should. Or try switching all your interior lights off (especially the cargo light) at each interior light so that any opened doors or rear hatch won’t turn on any interior light.
