Rear Strut... New or Used (Salvaged) & Change both or one??

I have a rear strut that is bad on my 1996 Outback. I am inclined to buy one from a salvage yard near by because they are usually VERY well priced, even compared to other yards. I am curious, should I change out both rear struts or can I just change out the one that is bad? I am still relatively new to the AWD world. I know even mismatched tires can be bad so I just want to be careful.

Any input on getting new vs used struts would be appreciated as well.
