oops another late post, I ended going to Hal's auto repair in Sacramento, the timing belt with the usual water pump, was $814, they were super professional, very knowledgeable about subaru even though they don't advertise for subie or even foreign. they asked about replacing the tensioner and its pulley to save money, leaving the decision to me. I like that attention to detail. if it appeared in good shape, they recommended to not replace saying they never see these fail on their own. so I left it to them and they did not replace, so I saved some money there, hopefully it was the right decision and won't come back to bite me. If I get to the point of a 2nd timing belt I would replace tensioner then for sure. they saved the old belt for me, it looked in very good shape. they have a 3 yr 36k warranty that is transferrable! and they had a shuttle service. all in all am very pleased and seriously recommend them at least for a compare quote. its over a year now for the repair and all seems well
