My daughters 98 Outback automatic idles really rough at a dead stop with the car in gear and the brakes applied. Bumping it into neutral or park smooths out the idle. The car is throwing PO400and PO 403 codes. EGR system. Any ideas would be helpful. Jeffro

could be 2 or more problems. Any new front axles recently?

one of those codes is a circuit malfunction. that could be a broken wire or disconnected plug. It could be a bad solenoid too of course.

any work done before this problem?

That's the same problem I'm having with my wife's 95 OB EJ22/auto... no codes though.

Nor recent work, one day it was fine, the next couple weeks it was rough, then we parked it.

So far I've found and fixed a few broken emissions system vacuum hoses, with very little effect on the problem. Air cleaner lid was on wrong, one clip was under the lid, fixed that, slight improvement.

I hope you can find and fix the problem for your daughter with a lot fewer headaches than Lisa's car is giving me.
